Ms. Mullinax shared the ideas that the KES Student Council has for charitable initiatives for the year:
October/November – Food drive
After Thanksgiving – Penny Wars
Each grade gets a jug; silver coins and bills take away from the total money; display in front hall where the fall display currently is; money will go to Shop with a Cop; need prize for the winning grade
Spring – Relay for Life support activities
IV. New Business
Grade level and School-wide Behavior Rubrics
Dr. Nason and Ms. Fowler explained the implementation of schoolwide behavior rubrics; Ms. Fowler noted how successful they have been in 5th grade because the students do not want to be “on the rubric”; schoolwide success is evidenced in only two office referrals in Sept. 2017 versus 50+ in Sept. 2016.
How do we at KES identify and address Bullying
Dr. Nason gave an overview bullying and harassment identification protocol and procedural flow chart; Ms. Conowal, Dr. Nason, and Ms. Purdy attended a county training on preventing bullying facilitated by an attorney who deals with many bullying cases
Crisis Plan
A comprehensive crisis plan is in place for all elementary (and other) schools in Dawson County; the elementary school principals will be observing a mock crisis at the high school for training purposes; all KES teachers have a copy of the plan and school drills are ongoing; should the school be evacuated and students are not permitted to return to the building, the reunification location for KES is Harmony Baptist Church
Grade-level Field Trips
*3rd: Gold Mines (October)
*3rd & 5th grades: Musicals (December)
*1st: Burt’s Pumpkin Farm (Dec. 1)
*Ms. Fowler asked to for 5th: Wonder (matinee with other elementary schools)
Positive Office Referrals
KES is using positive office referrals to reward PAWS behavior and to build positive relationships, as well as to deter students from being “afraid they’re in trouble” any time they see Ms. Conowal or Dr. Nason or Ms. Purdy coming to talk to them; posted on bulletin board outside Ms. Conowal’s office.
School Improvement Plan
Ms. Conowal shared the School Improvement Plan (SIP) and asked the SGC members to take time to review it before the next meeting.
Focus on reading with two primary goals: Improving student reading levels and developing interest in reading at the same time.
Ms. Conowal stated that the biggest issue at KES is reading across all grades.
The data wall will help throughout the year with “points in time” evaluation/status; MAP assessment will provide K-5 baselines on a common instrument; this will allow teachers to determine if the gap is widening or closing
New reading program is helping to motivate students to read by making it fun (prizes, etc.).
Students are enjoying having myON because they’re able to choose topics they want to read about.
GMAS sheet shows four achievement levels (minimum = proficient); Ms. Conowal emphasized that instruction should reflect daily expectation that students are getting what they need.
